Net logon service missing
The net logon service is one of the most important services especially when your comptuer is part of a domain. It verifies the NT LAN manager (a Microsoft authentication protocol) and identifies the domain controller. If you check the description of the service in services console in Windows, it is described "Supports pass-through authentication of account logon events for computers in a domain." If this service is missing, there will be a lot of trouble as listed below..
1) The system could not log you on. Make sure your user name and domain are correct
All the users will get this error when they try to login. But if you unplug the ethernet cable, you will be able to login successfully if you have used the computer lately. This is because the computer authenticates you from the local cache. Similarly a local user account will work.
2) You will not be able to access any network resources eventhough you get an IP address.
3) You will not be able to change the computer name – because both the change button and the Network ID button under the Computer name tab in system properties will be disabled (greyed out).
Why:
The only reason why net logon and workstation services would be missing is that the "Client for Microsoft network" should have got uninstalled for some reason, most probably when removing an update.
How to fix it:
Goto Control panel and open Network connections.
Right click on which ever network adapter you are using (most probably – Local area connection or Wireless network connection) and click properties.
Under the General tab, click the Install button and select Client. Then Click the Add button and select client for Microsoft networks. Click Ok and close. Restart the computer.
