Winamp Auto-Tagger
Are you wondering if there is a way to find the artist and album name of a song? Yes Winamp auto-tagger is a built-in feature that comes with standard installation of Winamp that allows you to find the artist name, album name, Genre, Year, Composer and Publisher of a song automatically. With Winamp auto-tagger, you can find and tag the details of a song in seconds.
Winamp auto-tagger is powered by Gracenote, a company that maintains and licenses an Internet-accessible database containing information about the contents of audio compact discs and vinyl records. It uses Gracenote’s CDDB (Compact Disc Data Base) server to identify and tag the songs. It does not use any kind of meta-data or file name to identify the song from CDDB, instead it uses a 32-bit “DiscID” generated by a hash function using the parameters like start time, end time, total time of the track and few other data to identify the songs from the database.
How to use Winamp Auto-tagger?
Winamp Auto-tagger can be used in two different methods:
Method 1: Auto-tag a single track
- Load the song into Winamp for which you want to tag.
- Right-click on the song and click on "View file info.."

- On the "File Info" window click on "Auto-Tag"

- You will get a small pop-up with title "workin.." which says "Your file is being scanned, please wait.."

- Once it is scanned, you will see all the information for the song populated in the fields like Title, Artist, Album, Album Artist, Year, Genre, Composer and Publisher.

- Now click on "Ok" and you will notice that the song name would have changed in the "Winamp Playlist" window.

Method 2: Auto-tag multiple songs
- Enqueue all the songs to be tagged in Winamp
- Click on one of the songs and press Ctrl+A to select all the songs

- Right-click and point to "Send to:".Now click on "Auto-Tag"

- Wait for few seconds or minutes depending on the number of songs you have enqueued in Winamp. At the bottom of the "Winamp Auto Tagger" window, you will see a message "Accessing Gracenote Media Database..."

- Once Winamp fetches the data for all the songs, you will see "Done" under "status". You will also see there is no message at the bottom left corner where it said "Accessing Gracenote Media Database..."

- Now click on "Apply Changes" and you should see the names of all the songs would have changed appropriately
