User Authentication in Internet Explorer
The 'User Authentication' setting in Internet explorer is very important especially when you have network devices like routers that prompt you to enter the username and password to access the firmware. when you enter the IP address or the URL of the device's page, you will be prompted to enter the username and password. If you enter the wrong username / password more than 3 times, you will get an "error 401 - unauthorized access" but this happens sometimes even before prompting for the credentials.

Last week when I tried to access my Netgear router's admin page also known as the firmware, I got the following error:
401 Unauthorized Accesss
Access to this resource is denied; your client has not supplied the correct authentication
Usually when I enter the IP address of my router (192.168.1.1) on the internet explorer, it prompts me with a pop up to enter the user name and password. But this time it never asked me for a user name or a password instead I got the above error. But it worked perfectly fine on Opera and mozilla firefox. So I confirmed that the problem is not with the router but with IE.
This is because Internet Explorer is trying to access the router anonymously, which is restricted by the router. So I changed the way Internet Explorer accesses the router's page.
Solution
- On Internet Explorer, click Tools -> Internet Options.
- Click on the Security tab.
- Select the Internet Zone.
- Click Custom level and scroll down to the bottom.
- Under User Authentication, select prompt for user name and password.
- Click Ok

You will be prompted for username and password. Type the username as "admin" and password as "password". This is the default username and password but it may be different if you or someone else has changed the password before.
If your username and password are correct you should be able to access the router page without any problems. If you have viewing the router page in Internet explorer, try mozilla firefox. Also make sure you always upgrade your router firmware version.
Check this link http://www.linksysbycisco.com/US/en/support/WRT54G to upgrade your firmware
Also check this link as well.. http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=5451

now it says it is not compatable. Had a friend give me this 192.168.1.1, said "type this into your google search, that should give you what you need to make it work". Well, I did that and here I am - is there something special I have to do to make it compatable with windows 7??
